Why Do Dogs Hide Their Things?

It's their instinct from when they were wild animals - they bury food that's left over for a "rainy day" when there's no food available. Domestic dogs need not do this, but due to their natural instinct they end up hiding their toys or treats.

Another reason a dog would hide his food is because in the animal world another animal might steal his food if it were not hidden. This basic yet unnecessary survival tactic is what helped keep dogs alive in the past. Your dog will want to bury its bone or food in a secluded place, preferably near its den or your home. You can give and train your dog to use its own special place where it can bury food and bones, much like a child is given a sandbox in which to dig.
